Tiptoe through the Tulips… at the Keukenhof

My brother was visiting me for a few days just recently, which of course meant we did all the touristy things one never does when you actually live somewhere. And one of those very touristy things is a visit to the Keukenhof, the largest gardens in the world and most Dutch people themselves have never visited despite it being less than an hour from Amsterdam.

It’s their loss honestly, as it turns out the Keukenhof is ridiculously, gorgeously lovely and pretty in a way that makes you take a million photographs but it doesn’t really capture the beauty of it. Sure there are a bunch of other tourists around, many posing for truly awkward pictures, and no Dutch child voluntarily dances around a maypole on a Sunday afternoon in traditional costume that I know of (though my brother and I watched in solidarity, having done many similar performances in our lives), but this is really one of those special places. We’re spent hours wandering around admiring everything, and if you don’t believe me, well I guess the photographs capture a bit of the magic-

  1. This is such a beautiful place, Yvette! Thanks for the tip! It is on my to-go list now :)

Yeah, not sure why more Dutchies don’t come here. I know we often never do touristy things in our own backyards, but this was seriously exceptionally cool. :)

  2. Why should we go? The tulips grows in our own garden. (Hail ruined it for me this year ;) ) and when I drive out of the village I can see a lot of flower fields.

And “de keukenhof” cost money :P

Ok, in terms that you Dutch understand, this is akin to saying “why would I ever want to go to the Westmalle Abbey itself when I can just pick up a bottle at Albert Heijn?” ;)

I mean I’m a big fan of spending money sometimes when it’s for a good experience. Like remember that trip I took around the world? That totally sucked. :p

      • I’m living in Flevoland. Here are the most flower “farmers” of the Netherlands. There exist a route which brings you to a lot of beautiful places. I think the most Dutchman likes this route a lot more than the Keukenhof. For in impression: http://wrm.streamingxs.com/?id=71041

And about the money: It was trying to be a little humoristic. :) The Dutch aren’t specially know for spending a lot of money…

        And BTW I don’t drink beer(don’t like it). :P and I’m shopping at the C1000. :)

  3. I’m going to be going there later this year when my parents come over to visit.

  4. Yvette, I just found your blog again, going through my cookies. Interestingly, I visited the Keukenhof with my family back 20 years ago, when I was in Germany. Thanks for the reminder.

Rick…. or you may remember me as Tensor.
